5 Summer Tips from Your Pediatric Dentist in San Luis Obispo

The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, which means summer is just around the corner! If you have little ones at home, especially ones who are in school, they’re probably counting down the days. Many things change with the seasons, but what should always stay the same is consistent oral hygiene. In order to keep your child’s smile healthy and safe this summer, here are a few easy tips from your pediatric dentist in San Luis Obispo, Dr. James Forester.

1. Keep Up Those Healthy Routines!

Many children stop brushing their teeth in the morning when they get to sleep in, and over the course of the summer months, this can really do a number on their teeth! Make sure that they still brush their teeth in the morning and at night, as well as floss at least once a day. For younger children, a brushing chart or daily checklist can add a little structure and help keep them on track.

2. Bring on the Healthy Snacks

Foods like fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, yogurt and cheese are great for keeping your child’s teeth strong. Keep them readily available so your little one can snack on them whenever they feel hungry between meals. These will be especially important as your child will probably be more active and burn off more energy, and speaking of which…

3. Water, Water, WATER!

Your child is probably going to be spending more time outside playing (at least we hope so!), and they are going to need to stay hydrated. Sports drinks are typically packed with added sugar, so when they need a drink, simply give them water. With water, they can get all the fluids they need without compromising their teeth. In fact, water actually gives their smile a nice rinse, so it’s great for when they’re out and about and don’t have time to brush.

4. Remember to Wear a Mouthguard

Sports are a great way to pass the summer months, but with them comes an increased risk of dental injuries. They’re actually one of the most common sports injuries for children and adults! No matter which sport they are in, it’s always a great idea to have them wear a mouthguard. This will provide an extra layer of cushion to shield their teeth and gums from potential impacts. Rather than getting a generic and ill-fitting mouthguard from the store, we can provide them with a custom-made one right in our office. It’ll be more comfortable AND do a much better job of protecting their teeth.

5. Don’t Forget their Dentist!

A dental appointment over the summer is a great way to take care of your child’s teeth AND remind them why it’s so important. This will give us a chance to thoroughly clean their teeth and stop small dental problems from becoming big ones. At this appointment, we’ll also take a little time to talk about why dental care is just as important over the summer as it is any other time of the year. Sometimes, this little reminder is all kids need to keep up healthy habits.
