5 Healthy Tips With Your Pediatric Dentist in San Luis Obispo

5 easy tips from your pediatric dentist in San Luis Obispo. It’s a new year, which means one thing to many people: New Year’s Resolutions. Since you’re a parent, you get to make resolutions for your little ones as well. You want everything to be better for them in 2017, but their health is probably your top priority. One simple way you can help is by having them take better care of their teeth. What are a few little things that could make a big impact on their smile this year? Here are 5 easy every day tips from your pediatric dentist in San Luis Obispo, Dr. James Forester.

Better Brushing – For many parents, simply getting their children to brush consistently would be a victory. You can also make sure that they are brushing correctly when they do. It’s best for them to brush at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, for at least 2 minutes each time. An electric tooth brush will help keep the time for them, but if they use a manual tooth brush, be sure you set a timer. One fun idea, however, is to play a little song for the two minutes to make it more fun. Be sure they are brushing all of their teeth, as children (and many adults) often miss their back teeth. We also recommend that parents assist their children in brushing until the age of 6.

Watch the Sugary Drinks – Cavities are caused by sugar. More specifically, the naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth consumes the leftover sugar on the teeth and turns it into acidic plaque. Drinks high in sugar like sodas and juices can speed up this process. Your children don’t need to give them up entirely, just moderate their consumption to help protect their teeth. Drinking juices with meals is also recommended to limit constant sugar exposure.

Drink More Water – This will also help limit the sugary drinks (see #2 above). Whenever they’re thirsty, make sure they just drink water. Not only will it keep them hydrated, but it will also give their teeth a nice rinse, removing excess sugar and food particles. It’s the next best thing to brushing their teeth, so have them rinse after meals if they don’t have time to brush during the day. This can be very helpful after snack time if you are out and about during the day.

Eat More Veggies – Vegetables can help their teeth in a few ways. Firstly, it fills them up without exposing them to excess sugar or salt that can damage their teeth. Also, particularly fibrous vegetables like celery and carrots actually scrub their teeth while they chew. You can dip them both in a bit of cream cheese if your child isn’t the biggest fan of vegetables.

Come See Us! – No dental care regimen would be complete without regular cleanings and check-ups. Two short visits each year allow Dr. Forester and our team to clean their teeth in ways they simply can’t at home, and give us the chance to catch any dental issues they might have early. If they already have problems with their teeth, our team can help take care of them too. All in all, your pediatric dentist in San Luis Obispo and his team can give their teeth just a little more help, and it may be exactly what their smile needs to be its best in 2017.
